Milky Way

Synopsis

In her final year of high school, Maria longs to leave her remote hometown for Athens. Her boyfriend, Tasos, works at the town’s only petrol station and sees no reason to imagine a life elsewhere. When she becomes pregnant, her family and friends celebrate, taking it for granted that she will become a mother. What they see as a happy beginning, Maria experiences as a narrowing of her choices.

She finds an ally in Joe, a new classmate who also stands apart from the community around them. Their friendship opens up a space for adventure, honesty and self-discovery as Maria confronts the gap between her own desires and everyone else’s expectations.

Created by Vasilis Kekatos, winner of the 2019 Cannes Short Film Palme d’Or, Milky Way combines tenderness, candid emotion and humour in a distinctive coming-of-age drama. The series made its world premiere in the International Competition at Series Mania in Lille in 2023.
