Synopsis
In 1886, Areti, a poor Albanian farm worker, flees to Corfu after a rape leaves her pregnant and cast out. Her son, Giannos, grows up facing prejudice within a rural society ruled by honour and rigid social hierarchies. His closest bond is with Margarita, the daughter of the farming family that shelters them, but his love for her brings him into rivalry with his childhood friend, Petros.
Margarita marries the gentle Arathymos while secretly pursuing an affair with Petros. After years away, Giannos returns, transformed by the guidance of a hermit, only to find himself drawn into their tangled lives. When Arathymos is murdered with Giannos’s knife, suspicion falls on him. His silence becomes an act of devotion with a devastating personal cost.
Based on “The Convict” (1919) by Konstantinos Theotokis, The Innocents is a period drama about selfless love, social hypocrisy and a society in which innocence offers little protection from injustice.
